Student Government Day

Open to all NTHS Students

Student Government Day is a tradition dating back many years. It's an all day event for a select group of high school youth who were elected by their classmates to “serve” as a city official or department head for the day. They are introduced to their city counterpart where they shadow them for the day. They are given the opportunity to see how our city operates in addition to getting a tour of city hall to meet other department heads including a tour of the police station and other city buildings. 

The day will proceed as follows:

Tentative Agenda


8:43am:   Bus leaves NTHS

9:00am:   Students arrive at City Hall   

9:15am:   Mock Council Meeting begins. Explanation of the day’s                                agenda, etc. 

10:00am: Tours of Police Headquarters & City Hall begin

11:30am: Students meet & greet Department Head/City Official in Council                  Chambers 

11:45am: Students depart with their Department Head for lunch at Hope                    Center 

12:00pm: Lunch begins at Hope Center 

12:45pm: Guest Speaker  

1:15pm:   Students leave Hope Center with Department Head/City Official                  & begin shadowing process

2:30pm:   Students arrive back to school.   

6:00pm:   Students depart for City Hall (Via their own transportation)

6:30pm:   Common Council Meeting begins 

7:30pm:   Following the Common Council Meeting there will be a social for                  students, parents, and officials at City Hall. Snacks and                                refreshments will be available.    

Interested students must first decide what position they are interested in shadowing.

  • Mayor
  • City Attorney
  • City Clerk/Treasurer
  • Council President/3rd Ward
  • Alderman at Large (2 positions)
  • 1st Ward Alderman
  • 2nd Ward Alderman
  • City Judge
  • Police Chief
  • Fire Chief

  • Appointed City Judge
  • Assistant City Attorney
  • Building Inspector/Code Enforcement
  • City Accountant
  • City Assessor.
  • City Engineer
  • Department of Youth, Recreation, & Parks
  • Director of Community Development
  • Mayor’s Assistant
  • Superintendent of Water/Wastewater

Important Dates:

  • March 19th: Applications are DUE to Mrs. Harrington
  • March 23-27: Campaign Week (Hang posters, speak in classes, etc.)
  • March 27: Voting Day (During all lunches)
  • April 21: Student Government Day! (All day event)
