Student Government Day

Open to all NTHS Students



Student Government Day is a tradition at NTHS dating back many years. It's an all day event for a select group of high school youth who were elected by their classmates to “serve” as a city official or department head for the day. They are introduced to their city counterpart where they shadow them for the day. They are given the opportunity to see how our city operates in addition to getting a tour of city hall to meet other department heads including a tour of the police station and other city buildings. 


The day will proceed as follows:


Tentative Agenda

 

  • 8:45 AM Students leave the High School by bus
  • 9:00 AM Students meet in Common Council room with Mr. Andres
  • 9:15 AM Mock Council Meeting begins. Explanation of the day’s agenda, etc. (Hosted by Rich Andres)
  • 10:00 AM Tours Begin. This will tentatively include:
        - Tour of Police Station (30 minutes)
        - Tour of City Hall Part I (30 minutes)
  • 11:00 AM Students meet & greet Department Head/City Official in Council Chambers
  • 11:45 PM Students depart on the bus for the luncheon.
  • 12:00 PM Lunch commences at Pane’s Restaurant (
  • 12:45 PM Guest Speaker – Mayor Austin Tylec including question and answer period. (Questions will be submitted ahead of time)
  • 1:15 PM City tour with Mayor, department heads and city officials. (On the bus to various locations)
        - DPW sign department
        - Wastewater plant
        - The REC
        - History museum
        - Other locations yet to be determined
  • 2:30 PM Students are returned back to school.
  • 6:00 PM Students arrive at City Hall
  • 6:30 PM Students attend Common Council Meeting
  • 7:30 PM Following the Common Council Meeting there will be a social event for students, parents, and officials at City Hall. Snacks and refreshments will be available.


Interested students must first decide what position they are interested in shadowing.

Important Dates:

  • March 17th: Applications are DUE via online submission
  • March 20-24: Campaign Week for elected positions (Hang posters, info tables during lunch, etc.)
  • March 28: Voting Day (During all lunches)
  • Election results announced at the end of the school day on March 28
  • Appointed positions announced March 29
  • Participant meeting April 25 after school
  • May 2: Student Government Day! (All day event)
